Kalyani was developed as a satellite township under the Calcutta Urban Agglomeration plan, initiated by former Chief Minister Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. The Master Plan highlighted the importance of education and health infrastructure, leading to the establishment of the University of Kalyani in 1960. Originally a unitary university with faculties in Arts, Science, Education, and Agriculture, it has expanded to include 62 affiliated colleges in Nadia and Murshidabad.
