It was founded in 1984 as Shanmugha College of Engineering, and on April 26, 2001, it was granted university status per section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. SASTRA Deemed to be University has received an 'A+' rating from the National Assessment, Accreditation Council (NAAC), and all the university's B. Tech programmes have been approved by the Institution of Engineers (India).
