Netaji Subhas Open University is the premier State Open University in India. The year 1997 was the birth centenary year of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The Chief Minister of West Bengal made an announcement at a State function that an Open University would be set up soon and dedicated to Netaji's hallowed memory. The Higher Education Minister, Govt. of West Bengal spearheaded the idea after his visit to the Open University in U.K. Under his instruction was set up a ten-member steering committee headed by late Dr. Bhaskar Ray Chowdhury, former Vice-Chancellor of Kolkata University.
About the Netaji Subhas Open University
The Chief Minister of West Bengal announced at a state function that an open university will soon be created in the remembrance of freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The Ministry of Education spearheaded the idea, and Netaji Subhas Open University, located in Kolkata, was inaugurated on 20th August, 1997, the birth century of Subhas Chandra Bose. The motive is to provide quality education to various disadvantaged groups of aspiring learners, without being restricted to geographical boundaries or financial challenges.
The university started functioning from July, 1988, with open and distance bachelor’s degree programs in arts and commerce with 31 study centers across the state. It has become the ninth State Open University and the 10th Open University in India. In 1999, 5 more study centers were opened. The university started offering a Bachelor of Science program in 2000, and the post-graduate subjects were added in 2002 and January 2004. Since 2020, NSOU has been offering online courses alongside open and distance learning programs. The university has UGC, UGC-DEB approval, and has a NAAC A grade, ensuring degree validity and learning infrastructure.
