In August 1951, IIT Kharagpur commenced its first session with 224 freshers and 42 teachers, initially utilizing the historic Hijli Detention Camp for its facilities and operating with ten academic departments. In March 1952, Prime Minister Pandit Nehru laid the foundation stone for a New Building. By September 15, 1956, the Indian Parliament recognized IIT Kharagpur as an Institute of National Importance through the Indian Institute of Technology (Kharagpur) Act, granting it the status of an autonomous university. Since its inception, the institute has developed significantly on its expansive 2,100-acre campus, now home to over 15,000 residents.
